I’ll Take a Chance on You, Don’t Make Me Regret It

September 28th – October 4th

Weather Girl – So, I finally got around to watching this winner of the 2009 deadCENTER Film Festival award for Best Narrative Feature. I missed the screenings at deadCENTER. And, I missed the screenings at OKCMOA later on in the year. But, I did DVR its premiere on the Lifetime network. I was determined to finally get my eyes on it. And, my verdict…

Meh.

It’s not horrible. I’ll give it that. It just seems to reside comfortably in a world informed by network sitcoms. And, that’s not really a world that often interests me. Its too predictable and safe. The filmmaking was fine. The actors were fine (if only Jane Lynch had been given a little more to do, I would’ve been rendered satisfied).

If director Blayne Weaver were to stash this film in his portfolio while looking for a network television directing gig, I think it would serve him well. I just can’t see how one would want to invest so much blood, sweat, and tears into making a movie with a story such as this one. You can have all the “big-name” casting you can get (Mark Harmon), but with a story that refuses to take risks, it doesn’t ultimately matter.

Hm, so it was exactly what I expected. Guess I can skip it, even though I did have an embarrassing drunken 3 sentence conversation with Blayne Weaver before the Horror Shorts at deadCENTER. It went something like this: “Hey, so what happened to you at that film festival was total BS maaaaan. It was BS!!!!!!” This was at the same screening that I knocked the empty beer bottle over on the concrete floor, which echoed loudly through the entire building. Prior to that I also fell down the stairs in front of Artspace Untitled and ruined one of my favorite pairs of shoes. Not my finest moment.

I believe that was also the same night we jumped the Alba shark (which was one of my finer moments).

All reminiscing aside, I’m glad I have your take on Weathergirl now so I can use that 2 hours of my life to watch something that will hopefully fall more in line with the type of film I would enjoy – with hopefully a bit more substance.

    Ha! Good times. Good times.

And, now I can feel better about watching WG if I think of it as doing a public service. I watched it so you (and Sarah) don’t have to. It’s my community service.

  3. GraceKathryn says:

Some of the headlines this week read “Obama calls public to community service.”

It’s good to know you heeded the President’s call and are acting in the service of your county, you fine upstanding patriotic citizen you. You must really love America! And you even did it prior to the recent headlines being released. Now that’s showing some initiative!

    Y’all crack me up.
